Coventry is the 9th biggest city in England, closely rivalling Birmingham for size and diversity. It is situated in the Midlands, in the County of Warwickshire and has a population of over 300,000 people. The city is mainly known in the UK as the area where the British Motor Industry evolved - and also for Lady Godiva!
Lady Godiva was the wife of Leofric the Earl of Mercia over 900 years ago. Leofric did not share the good Lady’s love of the city and tried to raise an unfair tax upon its inhabitants. Lady Godiva threatened to ride unclothed through the streets, if he carried out his plan. He imposed the tax and she kept her promise. All of the citizens averted their eyes (apart from one fellow the notorious “Peeping Tom” but her long golden hair hid her nakedness even from his prying eyes. Loefric believing this to be a miracle rescinded the tax!
From this charming tale it can be ascertained that Coventry has ancient roots and indeed despite the ravages of the Second World War it still retains a medieval core.
Dreadful damage was inflicted in the 2nd World War City but there are still valued features, most notable being the gothic ruins of the old St Michael’s Cathedral and the impressive Saint Mary’s Guildhall.
Even now Coventry is known as an area where the opinions of the common folk are valued. In the English Civil War the City was very pro Parliamentarian and it is believed that the origin of the phrase “sent to Coventry” arose from the custom of tolerating but never speaking to the many Royalist prisoners held in custody.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Coventry became a main area for clock manufacture and built up a pool of skilled artisans. These workers went on to help develop bicycle, motorbike and car manufacture in the 20th century. These were the golden years of British manufacture and Coventry was its centre.
This vital industry made Coventry a target city in the 2nd World War and it suffered dreadful bomb damage in. Over 4,000 homes were destroyed leaving a terrible wake of loss, injury and destruction This damage included the famous cathedral and following the post war Gibson Plan, a new St Michael’s Cathedral was constructed. This triumph of modern art was designed by Sir Basil Spence. It features a magnificant tapestry altar piece and an Jacob Epstein statue. Its cross of nails is twinned with a similar cross of reconciliation in the City of fire-bombed Dresden in Germany.
This spirit of hard work and regeneration has stood the city in good stead during the post manufacture era of the 21st century with a lively mix of travel and trade helping to develop new businesses and commerce.
