Sheffield - A City of Change

If you are searching for an accountant in Sheffield here is some general information about the area. Our recommended accountants cover all areas of Sheffield.

Sheffield, a city, in the West Riding of South Yorkshire is supposed, as was ancient Rome, to be built on seven hills. Controversy rages about this topic and often a total of eight hills are suggested! The districts of Hallam, Hillsborough, Bradfield, Ecclesfield and Stocksbridge would certainly vie to be included. The modern city of Sheffield, long known as the city of steel, originally obtained its name from the River Sheaf. It started as a small settlement in the 1st millennium AD. Now it is one of the eight largest regional English cities, with a population of over 650,000. It is sited partly in the Peak District National Park and stretches out as far as Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Chesterfield.

Sheffield has been occupied by man since the ice age, but it first started to develop after the Norman Conquest, when Sheffield Castle was built to control the Saxon population and it grew into a small town. By the 14th century Sheffield was already famed for producing good quality knives, and by the 18th century it had become the main centre for cutlery manfacture in England, as the silver plating process was discovered alongside a better method of smelting steel. This led to the rapid growth of Sheffield, in the industrial revolution. However, in the mid 20th century there was a downturn the city's fortunes following the oil crisis and the collapse in the coal mining industry and many mines and steelworks closed.

Urban and economic regeneration schemes which began in the late 1980s, have now transformed the city. The economy has experienced steady growth of around 5% annually, greater than that of the broader region of Yorkshire and the Humber.

Today, the air is clean in Sheffield with the image of a smoke-belching town long departed. Most of the City is built on hillsides out into the countryside. 61% of the City is green space with more trees planted than any other European city.

Modern designs and new architechture have arisen alongside graceful older buildings. Pleasant green areas, crossed with tumbling streams, grace the surrounding hillsides that once fuelled the manufacture of iron and cutlery.
