The city of Stoke-on-Trent is in Staffordshire and is home to 240,000 people . It's name comes from the Old English word stoc meaning place, and the fact that it is situated on the River Trent. It was made a city in 1925 and is in fact the coming together of six different towns - Stoke-upon-Trent, Hanley, Longton, Burslem, Fenton and Tunstall. Hanley has now become the main city centre which includes the Potteries Shopping Centre.

The mining industry was a major employer in the mid-twentieth century, employing around twenty thousand men. However the last mine in the area closed in the 1990's and now all that is left are the grass covered slag heaps from yesteryear.

The city of Stoke-on-Trent has two football teams of note - Stoke City, who currently play in the Premiership and play their home games at the Britannia Stadium, and Port Vale FC, who play in the Football League with their home ground being Vale Park in Burslem.
