Leicester dates back to Roman times and even today boasts the record of its past in buildings still standing today. It later appeared in the Domesday book and became a market town. During the Industrial Revolution, shoemaking and hosiery became mainstay. It was re-granted city status in 1919.

Leicester has the largest economy in the East Midlands.
